Ask any millennial in China, and you will find that, for most of us, we get our English names from our first English teacher — not our parents. So, thanks to Ms. Ye, I gladly became “Angela” at 7.

Ten years passed, and I came to the United States as an exchange student. On Matriculation Day, the school principal asked me to confirm my preferred name. Given I was the only Asian in this public high school in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, Angela seemed to be a no-brainer.

“Nobody could pronounce my name here,” I thought.
